TOP 5 THINGS TO DO IN MILAN, ITALY: A FIRST-TIMER’S TRAVEL GUIDE

Milan feels different from the rest of Italy—and that’s exactly the point. It’s fast-paced, fashion-forward, and undeniably modern. While cities like Florence and Rome feel like open-air museums, Milan feels like Italy’s business and style capital.

That said, timing matters here. When we visited in August during Ferragosto, many restaurants and bakeries were closed, which limited how much of the local cuisine we could experience. What we did try was rich, hearty, and comforting—perfect for cooler months—but Milan clearly deserves a return trip outside of August.

If Milan is on your itinerary, here are the top 5 things you should do, along with a few important tips to know before you arrive.

5️⃣ Aperitivo in Milan

Aperitivo is practically a ritual here. Order a drink in the early evening and enjoy complimentary bites that come with it. It’s social, stylish, and very Milanese—even if you’re just standing at the bar people-watching.

4️⃣ Try Osso Buco (When Restaurants Are Open)

Osso buco is one of Milan’s signature dishes—a slow-braised veal shank that’s rich and deeply flavorful. When we were able to dine out, the food leaned heavier than southern Italian cuisine, but it felt intentional and rooted in tradition rather than overdone.

3️⃣ Go Shopping on Via Montenapoleone

This is Milan’s most famous fashion street and a must—even if you’re just window shopping. Luxury brands, impeccably dressed locals, and serious style inspiration line the street. Milan does not play when it comes to fashion.

2️⃣ See a Soccer Match at San Siro

If there’s a game while you’re in town, go. San Siro is iconic, and the energy is unreal—even if you’re not a huge soccer fan. It’s one of those experiences that makes you feel the heartbeat of the city.

1️⃣ Visit the Duomo di Milano

The Duomo is breathtaking and unlike any other in Italy. Go early in the morning to avoid crowds and fully appreciate the details. If you have time, walking on the rooftop is absolutely worth it for the views. When you visit the Duomo di Milano, rooftop access with an elevator (to the first level) generally costs around €17–€24 per adult, and it’s worth the small extra fee if you want to save your legs—just know you’ll still climb a few stairs once you reach the terrace for the best views.

Milan is bold, polished, and unapologetically modern. While it may not deliver the same slow-paced charm as other Italian cities, it offers something equally special—a glimpse into contemporary Italian life. Visit outside of August if you can, dress well, plan your must-sees, and let Milan show you a different side of Italy.

Pro tip: Milan is a large city, so it’s not ideal for walking long distances like Florence or Rome. When you need to get around, Uber is reliable and widely used, making transportation easy and stress-free.
