When you’re in Italy, it’s tempting to try to see every city, landmark, and hidden corner you can squeeze into your trip. But sometimes the best experiences come from exploring smaller, charming towns that are close to the major hubs. One of those gems is Anzio, about an hour by train from Rome’s central station.
In August, the town is quieter and family-oriented, perfect for wandering without the chaos of big tourist crowds. The beaches are inviting, the Roman grottos are incredible, and the food—oh, the food—is unforgettable. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even hop on a ferry for a day trip to one of the nearby islands.

If I could only eat at one place in Anzio, it would be Ristorante Turcotto. Hands down, the freshest, lightest, most incredible Italian cuisine I’ve ever had. My husband and I literally ate there three times in six nights—and we would have gone more if we could. Pro tip: reserve 3–5 days ahead and request the balcony foyer with the ocean view.
Pro tip: Ask if they have any daily specials—these are usually the freshest dishes and sometimes not even on the menu.
2️⃣ Walk Around the Center of Town at Night
Anzio is full of little surprises after sunset. On a typical evening, you might stumble upon:
✦ Live music at Bar L’Orchidea (12 Via Alfredo Baccarini, Saturdays)
✦ Pop-up fashion shows or street performances
✦ Outdoor movies and events for kids
The center of town has this magical energy—small piazzas, cobblestone streets, and the scent of fresh bread and espresso in the air. Even just wandering aimlessly here feels like an event.
3️⃣ Walk to the Grottos and Snap a Photo
Anzio is dotted with stunning Roman-era caves, called “Grottos”, carved out centuries ago. They’re mysterious, dramatic, and make for amazing photos—perfect for Instagram or just bragging rights. Wander along the coast, peek inside the openings, and imagine what life might have been like back in Roman times. Early morning or late afternoon is ideal, both for the light and for avoiding the small crowds that trickle in during peak hours.
Pro tip: visit early in the morning for the best light if you love photography.
4️⃣ Take a Day Trip to a Nearby Island
From Anzio Port, it’s just about a two-hour ferry ride to the gorgeous island of Ponza in the Tyrrhenian Sea. This place is paradise—natural swimming pools, clear turquoise water, and charming little villages. To get around, it’s best to hop on the local bus. The roads are so narrow and twisty, you’ll probably spend half the time gripping the wheel and the other half dodging other cars. Let someone else handle the driving while you enjoy the views and maybe a gelato.
5️⃣ Indulge in Gelato at Gelaterie del Vicolo
Relaxation in Anzio isn’t just about lounging on the beach—it’s about treating yourself. My favorite way to unwind? A visit to Gelaterie del Vicolo. This little gem serves up creamy, dreamy gelato in flavors so good you’ll forget about your worries…at least until the last bite. Trust me, Anzio + gelato = perfection. Bonus: it’s the ultimate excuse to take a slow stroll and soak in the town’s charm.
6️⃣ Walk Everywhere
Anzio is small, charming, and 100% walkable. Sidewalks are stroller-friendly, so you can explore at your own pace. Walking also gives you a perfect excuse to sample every bite of local food along the way.
7️⃣ Bring Water
It gets hot, and dehydration can creep up on you fast. Stock up before you arrive—your future self will thank you after a long stroll through the cobblestone streets.
8️⃣ Get Off at the Right Train Stop
If you’re staying in the center or at the Airbnb I recommended, exit at the second Anzio stop. My husband and I learned the hard way—getting off at the first stop meant a 25-minute walk in the heat with luggage and no water. Lesson learned.
9️⃣ Bring Cash (Euros)
Many local spots don’t take cards, and even if they do, cash makes life simpler. It’s also easier to haggle at small shops, and it gives you that authentic, low-stress Italian shopping vibe.

Some of the best restaurants get packed quickly, especially in August. Ristorante Turcotto is a must, but don’t overlook smaller trattorias and cafes along the beach. A light breakfast, espresso mid-morning, pizza run—this is how Anzio becomes unforgettable.
